The main treatment for wet macular degeneration is anti-VEGF eye injections, which reduce fluid build-up under the retina and stop abnormal blood vessels from leaking. Treatment is carried out as a quick day procedure using local anaesthetic eye drops and usually causes minimal discomfort. Repeat injections are often needed every few months.
Most patients experience stabilisation of vision and reduced distortion. Around 90% benefit from treatment, with about 30% noticing an improvement. The aim is to slow further vision loss rather than restore normal vision.
